Rosie's Success Story: Overcoming Trauma and Drug Addiction

“Rosie” was taken away from her mother when she was seven years old. She was placed with some foster parents who had a sixteen-year-old son, “James”. James raped her. She was only seven.

Rosie was removed from that home and placed in another, but her life was permanently scarred by the trauma. Not knowing how to cope with what James had done to her, she started using whatever she could to cope. In her young adult years, she began using drugs and alcohol. She attempted suicide, and lived. She continued using drugs.

Rosie had several interactions with the law that landed her in and out of prison throughout her life. She attempted suicide again, and again lived through the experience, but only because of medical professionals.

She woke up in the hospital at the lowest point in her life. She asked God for help and made a real commitment to change. She was sent to a 90 day treatment program, and afterwards, a transitional home for women.

It was at the home that she started receiving counseling and was able to start working through the sexual assault and other traumatic experiences she’d experienced. It was here that she began to heal and she no longer needed drugs or alcohol to cope.

You wouldn’t know that was Rosie’s history if you met her today. She has a full-time job, owns a car and owns her own home. She is happy, hopeful and healthier now than she’s been most of her life. She’s restored her relationship with her mother and children.

“It’s only up from here on! I’m stronger than ever.”
