Vaughan's Success Story: A New Career

Vaughan is a resident of Richmond County. He was unemployed for a year, meaning his wife and two teenage children were only living off his wife’s income of $30,000 a year. It was a struggle to make ends meet. Vaughan decided it was time for a change. He wanted to get his CDL and start a career as a truck driver.

Vaughan came to Sandhills Community Action Program seeking financial assistance to go back to school to obtain his CDL. Vaughan was enrolled in the STARS Self-Sufficiency Program in September 2019. Vaughan enrolled in the Truck Driving training program at Richmond Community College shortly after. The case manager of Richmond County helped Vaughan pay his bills and learn the financial skills he needs for the future. He earned his CDL on December 11, only four months after starting the program.

His case manager then helped Vaughan update his resume and practice interviewing so he had a better chance at getting a job. Three months later in March 2020 he started his new career as a truck driver.

He loves his new career and is very thankful for the opportunity that Sandhills Community Action has given him. Vaughan is still working full time during this COVID-19 Pandemic. Now his annual household income is $59,000.

Congratulations on the new career, Vaughan!
