The Hinnefelds, Jennifer & Justin's Success Stories: Healthy Homes Initiative in Onslow County

Updated: Aug 4, 2020

The Healthy Homes Initiative Program helped a household of five senior citizens and three children have a healthier home environment by replacing the old carpets. Everyone is grateful for the new hard surface flooring.

Jennifer's Story

“Jennifer” is a homeowner in Onslow county who didn’t have a safe way to get in or out of her home. The lack of front steps was going to prevent her local Community Action agency from weatherizing the home. The Healthy Homes Initiative funds were used to build steps and a landing. Through this simple investment into the safety of her home, she was able to receive a new HVAC system through the Department of Energy and LIHEAP. Jennifer was so grateful. She hadn’t been able to afford heat in her home for the past 20 years. Her old heating system was not installed correctly and always ran on heat strips. Now thanks to the combined programs she can afford to heat her entire home.

Justin's Story

“Justin” is a senior citizen in Onslow county with multiple chronic health conditions including musculoskeletal issues, heart disease, stroke, arthritis and heart disease.  Justin had recently broken his femur bone in two places. The old wooden stairs to his home were not safe for him to continue using. The Healthy Homes Initiative funding was used to provide new stairs and a landing to his home.

We are grateful to have a sponsor like BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina who invests in our communities, and so proud to have Coastal Community Action as part of our network! We couldn’t do this important work without them and their dedicated staff!
