Nathaniel & Nancy's Success Stories: Healthy Homes Initiative in Rowan and Surry County

"Nathaniel" and "Bernita" are senior citizens in Rowan county providing a home for their handicapped son who is confined to a wheelchair.  Healthy Homes Initiative funding was used to repair the floor in the kitchen and build a handicap accessible ramp.  In addition, a vapor barrier was installed along with a bathroom fan to provide proper air ventilation.  Finally, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors were installed to make the home safer. Nathaniel said the Healthy Homes Initiative program “has changed my son’s life. Seeing him be able to get in and out of our home with his new ramps and being able to use his wheelchair on our new safe floor is more of a blessing than I could ever imagine.”

Nancy's Story

“Nancy” lives in Surry county who’s home needed many serious repairs in order to make it safe. The Healthy Homes Initiative Program provided floor repairs, replaced the old carpets with vinyl wood floors in the master bedroom and living room, installed CO2 and smoke detectors, a vapor barrier, and put mechanical ventilation in her bathroom. Nancy says “You just don’t know how much I appreciate the help. I feel like I’m in a new home!”

We are grateful to have a sponsor like BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina who invests in our communities, and so proud to have Yadkin Valley Economic Development District Inc (YVEDDI) as part of our network! We couldn’t do this important work without them and their dedicated staff!
