Healthy Homes Initiative

mp_rehab_1_logo.jpg

The Healthy Homes Initiative (HHI) is a Blue Cross and Blue Shield of NC (BCBS) - sponsored program that provides low-income families with FREE health and safety repairs to improve their overall health. Through this program, NCCAA helps to remedy the unsuspecting causes of illnesses hidden in the homes of vulnerable North Carolinians. Each participant can receive up to $2,500 in home health and safety repairs. Most Americans spend nearly 60 percent of their time in their homes. As a result, the conditions of our homes play a vital role in our health. Poor quality and inadequate housing contribute to health problems such as chronic diseases and injuries and can have harmful effects on childhood development. Through the Healthy Home Initiative, Community Action Agencies (CAAs) and state weatherization service providers continue to impact the health and safety of rural North Carolinians living in poverty by leveraging private foundation dollars from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. Since 2018, BCBS and NCCAA have disbursed nearly $2.5M in HHI dollars to low-income communities across the state. Because of HHI, service providers have served over 1400 families, installed over 2300 health and safety-related measures, and have positively impacted over 2500 household members. In addition to installing health and safety repairs, customers will receive information and tips on reducing their energy costs.
